At HFG, we’re proud to celebrate the women shaping the recruitment and insurance industries. In this special edition of ‘My Time at HFG’, we’re highlighting the journeys of women in recruitment, exploring their experiences, career growth, and what it’s like to work in our dynamic, fast-paced industry.
This time, we sit down with Vicky Cheong, who joined HFG’s Hong Kong branch in April 2020. She has since had multiple promotions, with her latest becoming Director of Hong Kong and Malaysia. Vicky shares her insights into the world of recruitment, the challenges she’s overcome, and her advice for women looking to succeed in the industry.
The Journey
What was your career path before joining HFG?
Before joining HFG, I worked as a tax accountant. This experience honed my analytical skills and attention to detail, which have proven valuable in my current role.
What inspired you to work in recruitment/insurance?
I wanted to transition into a more sales-oriented role and was particularly drawn to recruitment because of its dynamic, people-focused nature. The ability to interact with individuals daily while making a real difference in their careers excited me.
What were your first impressions of the industry?
My initial impression of the recruitment industry was that it was highly realistic and metrics-driven, with a strong focus on KPIs. I noted similarities to customer service and telemarketing, which shaped my understanding of the industry’s demands.
Career Growth & Challenges
How has your role evolved at HFG?
Since joining HFG five years ago, I’ve played a key role in rebuilding the Hong Kong office from the ground up. Over the past 3-4 years, I’ve developed operations and expanded our client base, ultimately establishing my own office. This achievement wouldn’t have been possible without HFG's trust and support.
Have you faced any challenges as a woman in recruitment or insurance?

What’s been your biggest achievement so far?
My biggest achievement has been successfully rebuilding the Hong Kong team and establishing office in Malaysia, which reflects my commitment and leadership in the industry.
