Our final blog is with one of HFG's most recent hires in London, Saffron Fearn. Saffron joined our Finance team in August 2024. Read her insights into the world of recruitment, the challenges she’s overcome, and her advice for women looking to succeed in the industry below.


The Journey: How you got into Recruitment & Insurance

What was your career path before joining HFG?
I went straight from university into this role because I have always been fascinated by the industry, having grown up watching my father work in it. Seeing his dedication and expertise inspired me to follow in his footsteps. The industry’s complexity, impact, and ever-evolving nature really drew me in.

What inspired you to work in recruitment / insurance?
Insurance plays a crucial role in providing security and stability, and I was eager to be part of an industry that makes such a tangible difference. Recruitment, on the other hand, allows me to help individuals shape their careers while also driving business success. It’s incredibly rewarding to match the right people with the right opportunities.

What were your first impressions of the industry?
Until working within insurance I didn’t realise that there’s such a strong sense of community. It is so lovely to meet professionals who are so passionate about what they do

Career Growth & Challenges

How has your role evolved at HFG?
Since joining HFG, I’ve gained deeper industry knowledge of the insurance industry as a whole and how it has become what it is today. Furthermore, I have started to built strong relationships with candidates.

Have you faced any challenges as a woman in recruitment or insurance?
As insurance has is traditionally a very male-dominated field, it has at times seemed daunting. However, having such strong support from both women and men around me has made all the difference. The industry is evolving, and I’ve been fortunate to work with people who champion diversity and inclusion, making it a great environment to grow and succeed.

What’s been your biggest achievement so far?
One of my proudest moments was successfully placing a candidate in a role that was a game-changer for their career. Seeing them thrive and knowing I played a part in that journey was incredibly rewarding. More broadly, building strong relationships and earning trust in the industry has been a key achievement for me.

Advice for Women in Recruitment & Insurance

What advice would you give to women starting out?
Believe in yourself and don’t be afraid to speak up. Build a strong network, seek out mentors, and never hesitate to ask questions. The industry is evolving, and there are more opportunities for women than ever before—take advantage of them!

What skills are most important for success?

Resilience, communication, and relationship-building are key. In recruitment, you need to be adaptable and proactive. Understanding the insurance market and staying up to date with industry trends also gives you a competitive edge.

Do you have a female mentor or role model who inspired you?
Katie, one of our Associate Directors, has been a huge mentor in helping me navigate the industry. Her guidance, leadership, and support have been invaluable in shaping my confidence and approach to recruitment and the industry as a whole. Seeing her success has been such an inspiration.

What’s Next?

What changes do you hope to see for women in insurance and recruitment?
I’d love to see more women in senior leadership roles and a stronger focus on mentorship for the next generation. Creating more inclusive workplaces and equal opportunities for career progression will be key to driving lasting change.

How does HFG support diversity and inclusion?

What are your goals for the next stage of your career?
I want to continue growing my expertise in recruitment and insurance, taking on more leadership responsibilities and mentoring others. Long-term, I’d love to contribute to initiatives that drive diversity and inclusion within the industry.
