At HFG, we believe that the journey of each new team member is unique and worth celebrating. In our blog series, 'My time at HFG’, we sit down with our new colleagues to reflect on their first few months with us.
From insights into their experience to career growth and the challenges they've faced, this series offers a look into life at HFG. Get to know the people behind the scenes!
Next up is Samara O'Hagan, who joined our Underwriting, Claims & Broking team in June 2024.
The Journey
What attracted you to recruitment and, specifically, to HFG?
I was drawn to recruitment because it's a people facing role which combines relationship-building with problem solving. I chose HFG for its specialist approach in the insurance sector, as well as the supportive and collaborative environment that I’d heard about.
How did you find the onboarding process, and what stood out to you in your first few weeks?
The onboarding process was seamless, making it easy to settle in from the start. In my first few weeks, I was especially impressed by the friendly atmosphere and the supportive team environment, which helped me grow into my role very quickly.
Experience at HFG
What has been the biggest learning experience for you since joining?
The biggest learning experience for me has been adapting to the fast-paced nature of the role, whilst also managing relationships with candidates. I’ve learnt how to balance multiple priorities, which has helped refine my time management skills.
How would you describe the company culture at HFG?
The company culture at HFG is collaborative, supportive, and results-driven which I expected in recruitment. The team are very supportive and it’s an environment which allows for both professional development and personal growth.
Have there been any standout moments or highlights in your time here so far?
One of the standout moments for me was successfully placing a candidate, who was stuck in a role with limited progression, into a position that matched both their skills and their long term career goals. It felt really rewarding to make a real difference in their career.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received from a colleague?
To never hesitate to ask for advice or clarification when needed, rather than remaining uncertain. There is always someone with the knowledge and experience to help, and it’s the best way to learn and grow.
If you could give advice to someone considering a career in recruitment, what would it be?
To develop strong communication skills and learn how to manage expectations. Being able to listen and understand the needs of both clients and candidates is crucial in recruitment.
Personal Interests
What’s something people might not know about you?
I am a three-time New Zealand national champion in rowing. I’ve had the privilege of coxing many former Olympians, as well as current D1 and Oxbridge rowers, which has been an incredible experience.
If you weren’t in recruitment, what do you think you’d be doing?
I’d likely still be working as a freight forwarder in the family business. Having grown up around the industry, I’ve always had a strong interest in logistics and enjoy solving the problems that come with co-ordinating shipments.
How do you maintain a good work life balance?
I make sure to set aside time for social activities outside of work. This allows me to fully disconnect and come back to work feeling recharged.
