Strategy and Planning

  • Assist in developing and executing the business plan for the portfolio, ensuring successful delivery.
  • Maintain awareness of the business plan and contribute to its execution by making informed decisions.
  • Actively participate in meetings to share insights, develop strategies, and exchange best practices.
  • Represent and promote the department, division, and company to enhance brand visibility.
  • Implement the reinsurance strategy to protect and strengthen the portfolio.

Policy, Process, and Procedures

  • Conduct complex underwriting activities in full compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Follow underwriting standards, guidelines, and best practices to minimise risk and enhance efficiency.
  • Ensure accurate recording and evaluation of insurance risks, including Delegated Underwriting Authorities (DUAs), modifying policy wordings when necessary.
  • Apply reinsurance requirements effectively to manage risk and align with business objectives.

Environmental Awareness & Customer Focus

  • Serve as a technical expert to identify key challenges and opportunities within the field.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders, including customers, brokers, business partners, and colleagues, to drive business success.
  • Support industry associations and trade organisations to strengthen market presence.
  • Stay informed about market trends and cycles to enhance business performance.

Technical Performance

  • Continuously expand expertise and technical knowledge through relevant learning and development initiatives.
  • Underwrite complex insurance risks in line with the business plan and delegated authority, negotiating terms, rates, and conditions while ensuring regulatory compliance.
  • Contribute to portfolio analysis and review to track progress toward business objectives.
  • Ensure all underwriting decisions undergo peer review and align with company standards and individual authority limits.

Skills & Experience

  • Extensive experience in underwriting within a specialised or complex area.
  • Relevant professional qualifications (e.g., CPCU).
  • Advanced expertise within a specific class of business, supported by significant post-qualification experience.
  • Proficiency in risk profiling, pricing tools, and loss modeling.
  • Strong, established relationships with customers and brokers.
  • Experience leading and managing underwriting teams.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and negotiation skills.
  • Strong customer-focused mindset.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines effectively.
  • Strategic planning and organisational skills.
