Take control of your own career…

1.    Do not let anyone tell you NO!

Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do something.

Going after your big goals and dreams is a brave thing to do. Many people get held back by the fear of failure and people around them telling them that it isn’t possible. On many occasions the chief pessimist that is telling you that you can’t do something is actually YOU.

The fear of failure blocks you and you come up with excuses as to why you cannot do something “I’m too young, not clever enough, I don’t have the time etc.” Try telling that to Sir Richard Branson (expelled from school at 16) Karen Brady (MD Birmingham City football club aged 23).

Don’t let anyone including yourself tell you NO. Instead, think of all the reasons why it can work and then make it work!

“Life’s battles dont always go the stronger or faster man. But sooner or later the man who wins is the man who thinks he can.”

2.    Be specific to your goals

Many people have broad goals, like make more money or get a new job this year. You do however need to have S.M.A.R.T. goals:

Agreed upon

Time- Based

Set yourself specific goals; how much exactly do you want to earn in 2017? When do you want to get promoted and how will you do it? What are you going to learn this year?

3. Take action

Be brave, take control of your own career and begin to move it forward. If you are stuck in a rut, take some time to think about how you can get closer to your goals. Ask a friend, colleague or mentor to help you to start moving forward. The hardest part in any journey is taking the first step, sometimes reaching out for a helping hand is all you need to do.

“You don’t have to see the whole staircase to take the first step.”

4. Back yourself

Whatever it is you do, believe in yourself! If you don’t believe you can do it then no one else around you will believe you can either. Don’t look back in years to come and think ‘I wish I had taken action and believed in myself more.’ Once you start believing and start moving forward then things will begin to snowball for you.

As Eric Thomas says “When you want to succeed as bad as you want to breathe then you will be successful.”
