On a rather wet 26th March 2015, 55 clients from the insurance market descended on Woldingham Golf Club for our spring golf day. As everyone pulled into the car park it looked as though there was more chance of water polo than golf, however the heavens eventually relented and we were able to start the Texas scramble on time. With a shotgun start it is crucial to get off to a fast scoring start and set an early pace. With Rob Callan launching some long drives it looked likely that team Thailand were in with a great chance, however he was not as well supported by Borowicz, Gallimore and Belk and his hard work was not rewarded.
On the opposite fairway, Brown, Bishop, Phinn and Black couldn’t find their own fairway and nearly killed the four ball opposite, however somehow they managed to keep scoring well. The eventual winners with a score of 3 under through 9 holes were team Italy.
After a quick turnaround at lunch, the players were back out for the 18 hole Stableford competition and in bright sunshine everyone teed off together. Curran and Ellis got off to a fast start with some steady drives and with Curran level par after 4 holes he looked to take an early lead. The heavens then opened again and those lucky enough to be in buggies took refuge whilst those on foot got soaked! After a 10 minute delay, play was back underway and with Rogers nearly holing his third shot on the 5th par, he was making an assault on the leader board. Whittingham was striking the ball cleanly when the sun was out, but his putter was not running hot and his three putts were costing him.
When all 55 players retired to the club house for dinner and refreshments there was much talk of the nearly putts and the shots that weren’t! “If only…” was the most commonly heard phrase in the club house.
The eventual winners were proudly presented their trophies by Shaun Rogers MD HFG, and a brilliant raffle raised a total of £1,080 for The Kwesi Fund – thank you to all of those who donated generously to this worthy cause.
Thank you to everyone who attended – another brilliant HFG golf day!
