December 2016.. another year nearly over and another conference complete. Newcastle provided this year’s backdrop for the IFoA’s Momentum Conference, which in my opinion, has been an excellent introduction for nearly / newly qualified actuaries. Individuals from Life, GI, Pensions and Investment backgrounds descended on the Hilton Hotel for what was to be an excellent three days.
The conference began on Wednesday with a fantastic evening of bowling, crazy golf, karaoke and a few drinks. I think everyone who attended (even those of us who were a little rusty when it comes to bowling) would agree that it was a lot of fun and a great way to spend the first evening.
Thursday saw the official start of the conference with a variety of plenaries and workshops for the delegates to get involved with. It also saw the official start of HFG’s conference competition. This consisted of a multiple choice ‘guess which statement is false’ quiz, with a Newcastle theme.
Our prizes appeared to go down well and attracted a lot of attention with the winner getting their hands on the coveted drone. The Thursday evening was the conference dinner which included entertainment provided by the inspiring Dame Kelly Holmes who talked about her Olympic success and what it took to get there.
Friday saw the close of the conference and the announcement of the HFG prize winners. For those wondering, the incorrect statement was ‘Newcastle is one of the 10 wettest cities in Britain’. In reality it is actually the 5th driest!
We had a great time at Momentum and thank you to all those who stopped by for a chat. As always it was great to see some familiar faces and of course meet some new people. David and I look forward to seeing you all at the respective conferences over the next year.
Have a great Christmas and see you all in 2017.
